Firstly, what is recycling?

Recycling is term used to describe the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials, reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials and reducing energy usage, and thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling is a key concept of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.

It is vital to the survival of our planet that each of us, as individuals, or collectively with organisations, friends and families, do what we can to reduce our environmental impact. A vital part of this is learning more about the effects of our actions on the environment, and what we can do to create a sustainable future!

The following pages are intended as a resource to enable you to find out more about the organisations involved with recycling. It includes links to trade associations, organisations committed to creating a greener environment, plus a general directory of councils, political parties and government bodies created by Keele University's School of Politics. There is also some background information about how the materials that we collect are recycled.

Unfortunately, we are unable to answer individual educational queries, but visits can be arranged for small groups, through your school or college, and we encourage you to use the links provided to find out more.
